Senator Olympia
Snowe is Honored by the
Senator Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) received recognition for her outstanding contributions to improvement of the water environment. The Water Environment Federation (WEF) bestowed the first ever “Public Officials Award” by Lynn Orphan, WEF President, to the Senator on November 1, 2005 during the WEFTEC Convention in Washington, D.C. Senator Snowe was nominated by the Maine Wastewater Control Association (MWWCA) and the New England Water Environment Association (NEWEA) for the award because of her initiation and support of programs that enhance the efforts of environmental professionals, provide clean air and water, and assure funding opportunities for clean water infrastructure. Representatives from MWWCA and NEWEA were present to congratulate the Senator and took the opportunity to talk with her and her legislative aide, Patrick Woodcock, about federal and State wastewater treatment issues. The Senator, as a strong and dedicated SRF supporter, expressed her concern about the Bush Administration’s request to rescind partial SRF funding by $166 million as part of cuts sought to supply relief to hurricane devastated areas in the Gulf Coast. Mr. Woodcock wanted to hear what MWWCA was doing to get necessary matching SRF funding in Maine, and was assured MWWCA and others had worked hard to convince the Legislature we needed an SRF bond, and were promoting its passage. We also discussed the looming loss of “institutional knowledge” that will occur within the next 10 years, as experienced operators and other wastewater professionals begin retiring. MWWCA and NEWEA support efforts by the Department of Labor and others to recruit and train a new work force to continue the important work of wastewater treatment. Accepting the award at her offices in the Russell Building, the Senator noted that Maine has a rich and non-partisan tradition of supporting environmental protection, as shown by Senator Ed Muskie (champion of the Clean Water Act) and Senator George Mitchell among others. She shared her memories of a malodorous Androscoggin River, carrying foam and other debris to the ocean, but now remarkably improved. Reading the Senator’s acceptance letter at the WEFTEC awards ceremony, Patrick Woodcock praised water resource professionals for the work they do to protect the water environment, and gave special credit to organizations like the MWWCA and NEWEA for the continued success of the Clean Water Act.
