About The Maine WasteWater Control Association

The Maine WasteWater Control Association is an association of over 650 members consisting of municipal and industrial operators, consultants, students, and Aerial View of the Lewiston-Auburn Water Pollution Control Authority - Click for larger view!regulatory officials. The purpose of this Web site is to facilitate communication of ideas that will result in achieving improved treatment techniques and the preservation of Maine's waterways. The MWWCA represents over 95 wastewater treatment plants serving over 125 communities throughout the state. It is governed by an executive Committee consisting of the Chairs of various committees including Education, Residuals management, Government Affairs, Awards, Collection Systems, Communications, Conventions, Industrial Operations, Laboratory, Personnel Advancement, Pretreatment, Safety and Public Relations. MWWCA holds two conventions per year focused on providing training for wastewater professionals throughout the state. We maintain close liaison with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (ME DEP) to understand and comment on proposed regulatory changes. We have proposed legislation in some cases to address our concerns, most recently successfully passing legislation to require dentists to install equipment to remove mercury amalgam from their wastewater discharges. We work actively to educate the public, rate payers, elected officials and other stakeholders on many of the critical environmental issues that affect Maine's water environments. Some of our more public efforts include our Clean water Week Poster Contest and the Stockholm Junior Water Prize contest.
