Operator Profile – Al Setz
by Chuck Applebee and Heidi Gage

Al Setz, an 21-year employee for the City of Gardiner, is retiring at the end of October after 32 plus years in the business. He has worked for the city of Gardiner since the initial opening of their treatment plant in 1982.

Prior to his tenure in Gardiner, Al worked in Los Angeles, California as a Senior Operator in charge of a shift with 200+ employees.

Although Al started as a plant operator, he progressed to lab technician and filled in the superintendent role whenever needed.

Chuck Applebee, Superintendent of the Gardiner facility, said, "Al reports to work early, fills any role asked of him and is always ready to step up to the plate to resolve anything thrown at him. He accepts nothing but quality work and always represents the City in the best possible light."

Al is well known as a mentor and friend to every person he works with. Although often sought out by other treatment facilities, he remained in Gardiner.

Al's sense of humor is also well known and he got the last laugh, when after being recognized at the recent MWWCA convention, he went on to win the Grand Door Prize, a feat he accomplished two years running! A source close to Al reported that he was known for "putting his name in many times in order to win".

We wish Al the best of luck in his future endeavors and hope he enjoys his retirement! Perhaps now he'll have more time to enjoy his hobby: restoring antique fire apparatus
