This year’s Utility of the Year Award is presented to the Bangor, ME wastewater utility, Bradley Moore, Superintendent. The utility serves a population of 43,000 people and has 23 employees. They are responsible for the operation of an 18 MGD plant as well as 157 miles of collection systems. The utility is in the process of a proactive Capital Improvement Plan to cost effectively replace major assets in the plant. The utility uses an extensive, state of the art, SCADA system to monitor plant functions 24 hours per day and are continually improving on the program. They have an excellent safety record of more than 4 years without a Lost Time Accident; this is published in the city newsletter every year. The WWTP is participant in National Bio-solids Program and extensively promotes this to the community. The utility actively promotes public awareness and teaches young students the importance of their utility. Presently they are piloting an endangered Atlantic Salmon Re-introduction Program. The facility and its staff have been the recipient of many awards including the WEF Public Education Award, Alfred E Peloquin Award (NEWEA), Operator of the Year Award (NEWEA), Past Presidents Awards (MWWCA), Presidential Service Award (MWWCA) and of course this years Wastewater Utility of the Year Award presented by NEWEA.
