George Motycka is the recipient of the NEWEA Operator Award for the state of Maine. George is the Superintendent for the Town of Castine Wastewater Treatment Plant. He has held that position for just three years, but has made significant strides to bring the plant into compliance. When he became Superintendent there in 2005, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection was seriously concerned that the plant would continue to violate its permit. Mr. Motycka and his staff worked closely with the Maine Maritime Academy to reduce loading to the plant and continue to experiment with methods to keep the plant in compliance. George demands a clean facility and attention to detail. This has served the system well as he is steering this 35 year old facility back into compliance. George goes above and beyond what is expected of him. He seems to have limitless energy, an insatiable desire to learn, eternal optimism and a great sense of humor when he needs it which will continue to serve him well as a wastewater treatment plant operator.
