Fluorescent Bulbs
Some big retailers are promoting compact fluorescent light bulbs
as a
way to save energy. But improper disposal of the bulbs creates a
hazard,
because they contain small amounts of mercury.
Recycling them is about to get easier. Home Depot, the nation's
second-largest retailer, will announce on Tuesday that it will
take back
old compact fluorescents in all 1,973 of its stores in the United
States, creating the
nation's most widespread recycling program for
the bulbs.

Guidelines
For Composite Sampling Reviewed
Some independent Maine
environmental laboratories (contract labs) that collect and report
data on composite samples use the last day of collection as the
sample date. Although the federal rule and Maine DEP policy
differ, reporting the second day of a composite as the sampling
day may not be acceptable under either rule or policy. Portions
of the rule and policy are included below, for your reference.

Safe water shouldn't be taken for granted
A safe, sustainable
water supply is fundamental to economic growth and prosperity,
which, in turn, creates new jobs and an expanding local tax base.
In terms of existing businesses,
tap water is often critical to day-to-day operations and
production.
Safe
Medicine Disposal for ME
Maine initiates new pilot
program for medicine disposal. Flushing medications is no longer
acceptable due to environmental concerns, and putting them in the
garbage is also discouraged. A pilot program, which ME DEP is part
of, will be placing a limited number of postage-paid mailers at
various Maine pharmacies starting May 12th.
