2008 Fall Convention

September 24-26, 2008
Sunday River Grand Summit Hotel & Conference Center
Bethel, Maine

The Maine WasteWater Control Association will hold its annual Fall Convention at Sunday River in Bethel, Maine on September 24-26, 2008. The convention is typically attended by over 300 waste water professionals and provides an excellent opportunity for manufacturer representatives, industrial distributors, contractors, financial institutions, and engineering firms, to present information about products and services to potential clients.

The Fall Convention is the only MWWCA sponsored event that will feature exhibitor representation. It is a two-day event with an optional golf tournament or recreation on your own on Wednesday, September 24th (see attached recreational activities flyer).
The Vendor packet information for the upcoming 2008 Fall Convention is available here. The brochure, which includes the exhibitor registration form, as well as the information for the golf tournament is included in this pdf file.

Towns along Penobscot River threatened with lawsuit

The company that owned the former Holtrachem plant in Orrington has threatened to sue communities along the Penobscot River unless they sign off on all future claims against the mercury-contaminating firm.

The Chicago-based law firm Sidley Austin LLP, with offices across the globe, notified the communities by letter last week that unless they signed a "Tolling and Standstill Agreement," by Wednesday they would be slapped with a federal suit accusing them of complicity in polluting the river.

Judge approves second phase of Penobscot pollution study

A federal judge has approved the details of a study that will examine whether it would be better to remove toxic mercury downstream from the former HoltraChem factory or to allow the Penobscot River to flush the pollution naturally.

Peter Dana Point: Sewage upgrade honors director of public works

Indian Township tribal Chief Billy Nicholas (left) Tuesday pays honor to tribal elder George Stevens with words and gifts. The new Peter Dana Point Wastewater Treatment upgrade was dedicated to Stevens who spent 50 years in the tribe's Public Works Department and who helped spearhead the project. Gov. John E. Baldacci joined tribal, state and federal officials on Tuesday for a smudging ceremony and celebration of the completion of the nearly $8 million Peter Dana Point Wastewater Treatment upgrade.

MWRD eyes study on drugs in water

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District may soon study how Chicagoans dispose of their unused medication, which could be the first step toward limiting the amount of pharmaceuticals entering the city's water. MWRD is following a similar program started in Maine.

Governor Ceremonially Signs Water Bond Bill

Governor John Baldacci Tuesday ceremonially signed a bill that authorizes a $3.4 million bond for drinking and waste-water management that will yield a five-to-one federal match. If voters approve the measure in November, Maine will receive $17 million in matching federal funds to keep our water clean.

Home Depot Offers Recycling for Compact Fluorescent Bulbs

Some big retailers are promoting compact fluorescent light bulbs as a
way to save energy. But improper disposal of the bulbs creates a hazard,
because they contain small amounts of mercury.

Recycling them is about to get easier. Home Depot, the nation's
second-largest retailer, will announce on Tuesday that it will take back
old compact fluorescents in all 1,973 of its stores in the United
States, creating the nation's most widespread recycling program for
the bulbs.

Dried-up aid cited in glut of projects

Maine's economic development has been slowed because of an increasing backlog of drinking water projects and needed wastewater treatment upgrades, state officials say.

Guidelines For Composite Sampling Reviewed

Some independent Maine environmental laboratories (contract labs) that collect and report data on composite samples use the last day of collection as the sample date.  Although the federal rule and Maine DEP policy differ, reporting the second day of a composite as the sampling day may not be acceptable under either rule or  policy. Portions of the rule and policy are included below, for your reference. More................

Maine Does Well Controlling Sewer Overflows

In a USA Today news story, Gannett News Service analyzed federal data on enforcement actions and fines related to sewage overflows from January 2003 to February 2008. The data indicated that $35 million in fines were levied by federal and state regulators at hundreds of large sewage treatment facilities.

The article reported no fines were levied in Maine and eight other states including Arizona, Hawaii, Kansas, Oregon, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming.

Dugovic receives Sid Anthony Award

After returning from retirement to rescue a water district needing major repairs, George Dugovic, Alfred Water District chairman, received the Maine Water Utilities Association's 2007 Sid Anthony Award April 7.

Safe water shouldn't be taken for granted

A safe, sustainable water supply is fundamental to economic growth and prosperity, which, in turn, creates new jobs and an expanding local tax base. In terms of existing businesses, tap water is often critical to day-to-day operations and production.

Safe Medicine Disposal for ME

Maine initiates new pilot program for medicine disposal. Flushing medications is no longer acceptable due to environmental concerns, and putting them in the garbage is also discouraged. A pilot program, which ME DEP is part of, will be placing a limited number of postage-paid mailers at various Maine pharmacies starting May 12th. For more information on this initiative............
