Jane Carroll of the Augusta Sanitary District Receives NEWEA 2005 Safety Award at Annual NEWEA Conference in Boston, Massachusetts

Jane Carroll receives the NEWEA Operator Safety Award from
outgoing NEWEA President Douglas Miller.

The NEWEA Operator Safety Award  was established in 1995 and is presented, based on the NEWEA Safety Committee’s recommendation, to an operations employee from New England who has shown outstanding safety initiative, and who has worked to promote a high consciousness of safety in the workplace.

As Laboratory Director for the Augusta Sanitary District, Jane Carroll has gone well beyond her normal duties by her focus on developing and maintaining a comprehensive and effective safety program for the district.  She took it upon herself to turn a minimal safety program into what is now considered one of the best in Maine.  She has led the District’s safety committee and staff in raising awareness to the point where the WWTF has experienced only one minor lost time accident in the last eight years at the WWTF.  She has submitted for, and been awarded, on behalf of the District, outside grants for purchase of safety equipment.  She is also responsible for scheduling up to 20 training seminars per year.  She has also promoted staff training consciousness, instilling in them the knowledge that where their safety is concerned, no request is too large, be it for chemical suits, signage, or bottles and labels.
