Abrahamson Recipient of the
NEWEA Alfred E. Peloquin Award

Janet Abrahamson Recieves Alfred E. Peloquin Award at MWWCA Spring Meeting 2005

Douglas Miller, NEWEA President (above, left), presents Janet Abrahamson, former MWWCA President, currently a circuit rider with MRWA, with the Al Peloquin Award.

After receiving her bachelors degree in chemistry from the University of Lowell in Lowell Massachusetts Janet began her career in the environmental field in 1985 working as a chemist and pretreatment Coordinator for the Kennebec Sanitary District in Waterville, Maine. From the start she became active in training activities, beginning with training other plant operators in laboratory, safety and process control both at the District and as a member of the Maine Wastewater Control Association. She has made presentations in chemistry and process control for MWWCA at their conferences, as well as for JETC classes. She helped develop the MWWCA Lab Manual which has become a staple for training operators in proper laboratory procedures. In 1995 she received a certificate of Achievement Award from the Maine DEP for her efforts in pretreatment and in the laboratory.

As the Program Committee Chair and one of then directors from 1997 to 1999 for the Association of Maine Environmental Laboratories (AMEL – of which she has been a member of since 1985) and as personnel Advancement Chairperson for the MWWCA for the past several years, she has organized numerous training sessions for laboratory personnel and wastewater operators.

After 17 years at the Kennebec Sanitary District, Janet joined the Maine Rural Water Association ( a private, non-profit training and assistance and advocacy group) as a Wastewater Circuit Rider in May 2002. She is responsible for providing training and technical assistance to wastewater systems and municipalities throughout Maine. Janet always tries to tailor the training to the needs and desires of operators, both in one on one as well as in group settings. Her dedication to the power of knowledge is truly inspirational.
