John Hart of the Saco Wastewater Treatment Facility Receives the Arthur Sidney Bedell Award at the Annual NEWEA Conference in Boston, Massachusetts

John Hart receives the WEF Arthur Sidney Bedell Award.

The Arthur Sidney Bedell Award was established to acknowledge extraordinary personal service to a Member Association. General criteria may include organizational leadership, administrative services, membership activity, stimulation of technical functions, or similar participation. However, the Member Association has ultimate control over the selection criteria. The award is named for the second President of the Federation, who exemplified it’s purpose by his long devotion and service to the New York Sewage and Industrial Wastes Association, now the New York Water Environment Association.

WEF is pleased to present the Arthur Sidney Bedell Award to:

John Hart
Saco, Maine

John Hart’s introduction to NEWEA and WEF activities was his involvement in one of the premier events of both NEWEA and WEF- “Operations Challenge.” His journey started in 1988, when he was an original team member of the “Maine-ly New Englanders” Operations Challenge Team, that progressed from local competition to compete in the earthquake-interrupted national competition in San Francisco that year. Hooked on the event, John’s participation grew, and he went to work to help organize, coordinate, coach, and support the rise of NEWEA to national prominence in the event. He organized and chaired the New England event for years, and his involvement in both local and national WEF competitions culminated in his being named Chairman of the prestigious WEF Operations Challenge Committee from 2002 through 2004. His involvement has reached international proportions, as he was the driving force in the 1st International Operations Challenge Exchange with Argentina in 2003.

John’s long-term dedication and accomplishments have been recognized previously by his home state association (MWWCA) and NEWEA through the Alfred E Peloquin Award in 1996 and Operator Award in 1999. He was inducted into the 5-S Society in 2004.

John’s long and sincere dedication to the NEWEA and WEF organizations makes him truly deserving of this prestigious WEF award.
