Maine Wastewater Operator Reciprocity

Certifying Operators by Reciprocity

1.Applications for certification by reciprocity must be made on the Standard Application Form furnished by the Department or a suitable facsimile thereof.  All applications must be signed and notarized before acceptance by the Operator Certification Staff.

2.Applicants for certification by reciprocity must meet the following conditions:

a. The applicant must be certified in a State or other jurisdiction that grants reciprocity to operators certified in Maine.

  1. The applicant must have obtained his/her present certification as the result of passing a written exam.  Reciprocity will not be given for operators who obtained their certification through “grandfathering” or through reciprocity with another jurisdiction.

  2. The applicant’s certification in the other jurisdiction must be valid at the time he/she applies for reciprocity in Maine.

3.If the above conditions are met, the applicant will be certified at the grade which corresponds to the highest grade level obtained in the jurisdiction where the operator is currently certified, or, the highest grade level for which the operator would be eligible if he/she were certified through examination in Maine, if that grade is lower.

(Example:  In some states, an operator may take and pass the equivalent of the Maine Grade 5 operator exam without having the experience required to take that exam in Maine.  In that case, the applicant’s experience will be evaluated and the certificate awarded based on the level of experience rather than on the level of exam passed in the other jurisdiction.)
