The Maine Wastewater Control Association (MWWCA) is a not for profit professional organization made up principally of municipal, but also industrial, wastewater treatment plant personnel, and a consortium of environmental consultants and other persons interested in environmental protection of water resources. Our mission is to promote environmental management practices that protect and improve the waters and related environments in the State of Maine. We are in support of S. 351, a bill introduced by Senator Susan Collins, that would establish the Mercury Reduction and Disposal Act. The Act would help reduce pollution and protect American families and wildlife from mercury, a dangerous neurotoxin. It will provide a framework for removal of mercury thermometers from private households by supporting local and state government agency efforts to collect and properly dispose of mercury thermometers. Several Maine communities, including Portland and Lewiston-Auburn, have co-sponsored mercury thermometer exchange programs and found that: The exchange process is an excellent vehicle for a municipal wastewater treatment plant or solid waste facility to provide public education on the dangers to the environment from improper disposal of elemental mercury, and mercury containing or contaminated household products; and Members of the public are eager to remove mercury and other household hazardous waste from their homes in a way that protects the environment, and are grateful for the opportunity to do so. The Act would allow more successful programs to be held throughout the United States, and result in many pounds of toxic mercury being removed from homes and the environment. If you have any questions on MWWCA’s position on S. 351, other issues related to control and removal of mercury in the environment, or the protection of water quality, please contact us. Thank you.
