"Suggested Guidelines for a Facility Open House"
2009 MWWCA Strategic Planning Session

To MWWCA Members,

In April 2009, the executive committee had a very successful planning session which five short terms goals were set. We decided that most of our rate payers do not have any idea what our industry does to protect the environment day in and day out. The planning group determined that it would be an excellent idea to have every facility to host an open house on a yearly basis. The group realizes that there are facilities that already do this but some facilities do not for various reasons. So we came up with a brochure that outlines ways to streamline an open house for the facilities that may have never hosted one or have not had the fanfare that was expected.

I have attached the "Open House" brochure titled "Suggested Guidelines for a Facility Open House" to be used as a tool to a successful open house. We would also like to get some feedback on the yearly tours. We would like to broadcast when the tours will be happening by listing them on our web site. This allows other wastewater professionals the opportunity to visit surrounding facilities.

Feedback on the tours would be great to see if this was a positive experience for the facility and community. Typically feedback questions would be: number of attendees, the age group, and effectiveness. A complete list with an interactive blog is available on our website for you to send us the results of your open house.

We are in hopes that by having yearly open house tours, the majority of the people will eventually grasp what we do and why were are here. The process of having a open housing can be daunting especially when very few people show up.

If we continue to host these tours, maybe understanding sewer rates and the need for voting on Infrastructure bonds will be better understood by our customers and the people of Maine.

Please feel free to contact me (abrousseau@sanfordsewerage.org) to assist you in any way possible.

Good Luck!
