NEIWPCC SBR Guide: Sequencing Batch Reactor
Design and Operational Considerations

Sequencing batch reactors – or SBRs – are becoming popular wastewater treatment options in New England and across the country due to their ability to treat varying flow rates and allow control flexibility. In addition, they have a small footprint and are potentially less expensive to construct and operate.

Wastewater treatment with an SBR is generally more complex and SBR facilities can be more complicated to design and operate than a conventional activated sludge process. These issues of complexity can become more problematic for smaller facilities. Because of this, NEIWPCC has developed the document “Sequencing Batch Reactor Design and Operational Considerations” that includes key elements to consider when designing an SBR facility as well as explanations of specific configurations and processes that will optimize SBR performance.

“Sequencing Batch Reactor Design and Operational Considerations” is written for municipal officials, engineers, regulators, operators, and other interested parties that use, design, or are considering implementing an SBR wastewater treatment system. The purpose of the guide is to increase dialogue and highlight enhancements to the design and operation of SBRs that will lead to more effective wastewater treatment. It can be used by municipalities in considering options for upgrading current operations or in reviewing new treatment plant options, by regulators who review SBR plans, and by engineers who design these facilities.

The SBR guide is an integral component of NEIWPCC’s TR-16 “Guides for the Design of Wastewater Treatment Work.” It is available in hardcopy for a fee of $15 or can be downloaded electronically for free from the NEIWPCC home page. The SBR guide should go a long way towards enhancing communication and optimizing wastewater treatment for communities considering this viable wastewater treatment option.
