Operator Profile – David Smith

Old Town Wastewater Treatment Facility
Old Town, Maine

By Steve Lane

David Smith was born in Winterport, Maine but moved to Bangor at the age of 2,despite the early relocation, David has maintained close ties with his birth community. Dave started his career  in protecting the environment working for the Brewer Wastewater Treatment Facility in 1987 as an Operator II. Dewatering was his primary responsibility during his 2 ½ year tenure at the Brewer facility. In 1990 Dave went to work for the Old Town Wastewater Treatment Facility as an operator. His primary responsibilities include dewatering, pump and equipment O & M as well as preventive maintenance on all equipment. He also performs pump station maintenance for Old Town’s 6 pump stations and Milford’s 4 pumping stations.

David remembers what got him started on his way to an environmental career. “ I remember the thick, brown foam on the Penobscot River when I tried to go fishing on it as a youngster. I knew there was a problem with the way it was then. When I got out of high school I found an opprotunity to help fix that problem as I got involved in the wastewater treatment field.

In addition to his duties in Old Town, David has worked part time for the Winterport Sewer District since 1992. He often assumed responsibility for its wastewater operations as personnel have come and gone at the facility. Al Faust, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Winterport Sewer District David is appreciative of Dave’s support for the District. “Dave Smith is an example of the community minded citizen that small towns in Maine can not get along without. David has supported the Districts through thick and thin, providing professional supervision during periods between full time operators and weekend coverage for the Districts on his time off from his full time job. There are a few people in town who realize the important role David and a few others have played over the years, but the general public does not realize the key role people like David play in their daily lives. Every time I look at the Penobscot I am reminded of David's contribution to our quality of life”, says Faust.

The Old Town Wastewater Treatment Facility is currently under going a major plant upgrade. The new headworks and primary clarifies are now online. A new SCADA system being installed at the treatment plant has also peaked Dave’s interests. Dave says he is anxious for the upgrade to be completed so that operations can return to normal.

Residing in Winterport, Dave has been  married to wife Deanna for  13 years.  She  works for Arpels in Winterport as a receptionist and for M.J. Construction as the office manager. Dave and Deanna have three boys: Shawn age 12, Dan age 10 and Brandon age 4.

David maintains a Grade 4 wastewater operations license as well as a grade 3 Collections System license. He graduated from Bangor High School in 1982 and from Eastern Maine Vocational Technical Institute in 1987 with an Associates Degree in Environmental Technology.

Dave’s time away from work includes a lot of sports with plenty family involvement. He is a coach for the  Winterport Little League team as well as a T-Ball coach for the Winterport Recreation Department. Soccer is another  sport Dave enjoys coaching as he works with the Hampden Soccer Club at the U11 level. He also plays men’s league softball on the “Hampden Family Dentistry”  Team in Bangor. David also enjoys NASCAR, is an avid Patriots football and Red Sox  baseball fan.

David Smith is perceptive of others in the wastewater field. He and his Winterport Little League team wish opposing team coach Howard Clark of the Searsport Wastewater Treatment Facility a speedy recovery from his recent illness.

David and wife Deanna are looking forward to a trip to Disney World this fall with their three sons. With two jobs, a busy wife and children, one has to ask; How do you manage it all, Dave?
